Bariatric surgery or weight loss surgery reduces the risk of heart attacks and strokes in formerly obese people thus reduces the risk of death from heart diseases - study

bariatric-weight-lossEach day the number of obese patient increases, obesity is not limited to adults the kids are also on the way of obesity at alarming rate. Obesity is one of the leading preventable causes of death globally, and alone is the root cause of chronic diseases including diabetes, hypertension, cardiovascular diseases and many more. It has been proved in number of studies that by mere reducing the weight in obese patient can help get rid of symptoms of these diseases. On the base of the findings obtained, after the comparative follow up for about 14.7 years, researchers’ of the University of Gothenburg in Sweden suggest that  weight reduction bariatric surgery not only improves quality life of formerly obese patient it also cuts down the death risk due to heart diseases.(cardiovascular diseases). However, the findings also raises the questions regarding which patients benefit the most from surgery.

The study is the first controlled clinical trial to measure the impact of bariatric surgery on heart health. In a study they compared 2,010 Swedish middle aged people who had undergone the bariatric surgery with 2,037 similar obese people who received normal medical care such as counselling on lifestyle choices. All of them were followed for an average of 14.7 years.

On the base of the findings researchers noted that weight loss surgery reduces the risk of death from heart disease or cardiovascular diseases- heart stroke or heart attack (Ischemic heart disease)

In the surgery group, 28 cardiovascular deaths were recorded compared with 49 in the control group. Overall, there were 199 cardiovascular events in the surgery group; where as 234 people had developed heart disease in the control group.

On further analysis of the data, researchers noted that amount of weight people lost wasn't related to their later risk of cardiovascular problems; such findings could be because of the design of the study. However, chances are great that the impact of bariatric surgery on heart health is tied to other factors besides body mass index says the researchers. Here the author of study added that patients with higher insulin levels before surgery experienced the greatest benefits from surgery. "high insulin may be a better selection criterion for bariatric surgery than high BMI, as far as cardiovascular events are concerned,"

Important to note:
In spite of the great benefits of the bariatric surgery one should not ignore the risk and complications associated with them. The common risk and complications associated with gastric band surgery include

  • Pulmonary embolism
  • Haemorrhage, Blood clots and Infection
  • Negative reaction to anaesthesia or medication
  • Stomach ulcer or gastritis
  • Infection
  • Injury to abdominal organs
  • Gastric band may slip from the fitted place
  • Vomiting after consuming food
  • Malnutrition risk may develop
  • Inadequate weight loss
  • Hernia

Experts view:
In an accompanying JAMA editorial, Dr. Edward Livingston, at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, writes that "because the expected health benefits do not necessarily exceed the risks of weight-loss operations, obese patients without other weight-related complications generally should not undergo bariatric surgery." The study appears in the current issue of JAMA, the Journal of the American Medical Association.
