How you wash your face can make a difference in your appearance says dermatologist from American Academy of Dermatology

A study suggests that only 50 percent of women wash their face regularly. And even most of them are not using the correct product, rinsing properly or treating their skin with the care it deserves.

“It’s important for people to treat the face with care. Never scrub the skin or use harsh products as doing so irritates the skin, which makes skin look worse,” said Thomas E. Rohrer, MD, FAAD, a board-certified dermatologist in private practice in Chestnut Hill, Mass.

Similarly over washing face is also detrimental for your skin and look. "Many people have the concept that skin needs to be squeaky clean," explains Hema Sundaram, MD, a Washington, DC-area dermatologist and laser expert, in a published article.  She suggests that over washing could strip of the protective barrier of face skin. The clean skin means dewy not the tight.

Tips for cleaning your face to keep it fresh and healthy…

  • Choice of cleanser is very important .Use a gentle, non-abrasive cleanser that does not contain alcohol, suggest dermatologist from AAD.
    While choosing cleanser, consider the type of your skin. For oily skin select gel wash, that helps dissolve oil, make up and sunscreen suggest Jessica Wu, MD, assistant clinical professor of dermatology at USC Medical School and a dermatologist in Los Angeles.  For normal skin she recommends use of foaming lotion cleanser and for dry or sensitive skin gentle creamy cleanser in a published article.
  • Before washing your face ensure your hands are clean, wash them properly with antibacterial soap to avoid transferring of germs from hands to face.
  • Tie your hair to keep it away from your face, ears and neck, this will provide an easy access when you wash your face. Remove eye makeup using make up remover.
  • Wet your face with lukewarm water and use your fingertips to apply cleanser. Do not use washcloth, mesh sponge, except your finger tips to apply cleanser and massage your face, to avoid irritation of face skin. Massage your neck using upward strokes.
  • After cleansing, rinse face thoroughly and repeatedly to remove cleanser. Use your hands to cup water and bring warm or tepid water to your face to clear residue of cleanser.  Avoid using too hot or too cold water to wash your face as it can dry your skin suggests experts.
  • Use a clean and soft towel to pat your face dry. Gently pat your face without rubbing towel on your face. Of course, use clean towel to avoid putting dirt or bacteria back on your cleaned wash face.
  • Moisturise your skin using moisturiser as per type of your skin. Take utter care while applying cream around eyes area.  Skin around eyes is too delicate so avoid pulling too hard.

Lastly, experts recommends to limit washing face to twice daily (once in morning and once at night) and after sweating.  Sweating irritates the skin. , so wash your skin immediately after profuse perspiring when wearing hat or helmet.

Additional recommendation from experts, 

  • People with large pores can use toner to tighten the pores; toner will also help to remove residue or cleanser.
  • Avoid use of facial products with artificial fragrances and preservatives, especially if you have very sensitive skin, as this can lead to allergic reactions.
  • Drink plenty of water to keep your skin well hydrated.
  • Eat a healthy diet including enough portions of fruits and vegetables rich in vitamin A and E that are known to be beneficial for keeping skin healthy.
  • Consult a dermatologist for better results, if needed.
To look and feel good it’s important to develop good habits. Include proper washing of the face in your daily skin care regime.
