7 Ways to Deal with Chronic Cough Effectively

Chronic disturbing cough can be handled in effective ways.

Causes for chronic cough

  • Postnasal drip: Production of extra mucous by nose and sinuses after cold, flu and allergic rhinitis that drip down into the throat.
  • Asthma

  • Smoking

Stay hydrated

Maintaining adequate hydration thin out the mucous from respiratory passages and facilitate easy transport outside nasal passages.

Fluid helps to keep mucous membrane moist and sooth and prevent irritating effect of sore throat. So drink an ample amount of water, juice and soups to keep your body hydrated.

Steam inhalation

Steam inhalation for 10 minutes for two to three times a day moisturizes the throat and lungs. Steam helps to loosen the secretions from respiratory passages. Adding few drops of eucalyptus oil having antibacterial properties clear out the cough effectively.


Gargling is a good remedy to deal with the sore throat. Gargling with hot saltwater solution three times a day cleans mucous from mouth and throat and gets rid from cough.

Avoid irritant

National Heart Lung and Blood Institute advice on avoiding common irritant in air that makes you cough.

For an asthmatic person, it may be cigarette smoke, certain foods, or cold. For a person without asthma, it is likely to be pollutant, perfumes, scents, paint fumes, dust, pet dander and air born irritant that can trigger an allergic reaction and subsequently cough.

 Keep a tract on things that make you cough persistently.

Quit smoking

Smoking causes chronic bronchitis, a clinical condition characterized by persistent cough. Irritating nature of smoke worsen the cough caused by other factors hence quitting smoking is a good way to reduce cough severity.

Control acid-reflux

Acid-reflux can be controlled with dietary changes. Avoid spicy, oily and junk foods that can cause heartburn. Eat smaller portion of food at frequent intervals for better digestion. Avoid lying down immediately after food intake. Keep a gap of two to three hours after meal and before going for sleep.

Natural remedies

Honey acts as a natural cough suppressant. Taken alone or in combination with water, honey sooth mucous membrane of throat and help to get rid from soreness. Mint and ginger tea are other good ways to relieve cough. Thyme, a herb, has antibacterial and antiseptic properties and can be used in tea for cough relief.
