Daily we are exposing ourselves to hidden household dangers on large scale...

p_cleaning_caddyOur modern lifestyle, busy schedule and awesome luxury trends demand us to use certain products regularly. These products carry warning signs or caution but knowingly or unknowingly; we are ignoring these and exposing ourselves to hidden household dangers. They are either toxic or cumulative and damaging our body time to time.

Dr.Myron Wentz and Dave Wentz in their book, “The Healthy Home, simple truths to protect your family from hidden household dangers” have listed out the common household products endangering our life and solution for that. According to author our bedroom, bathroom, kitchen, living room and garage, all are filled with dangerous poisons but there is simple solution to cut off the risk from exposure.

Identifying such hidden household dangerous is good to prevent ourselves from illnesses.

Fluoridated toothpaste

Your good morning may be started with exposure to household danger if you are using fluoridated toothpaste. If you take a closure look on your fluoridated toothpaste, it carries a warning, “Keep out of reach of children under 6 years of age. If you accidentally swallow more than used for brushing seek professional help or contact a poison control centre immediately.”

According to fluoride action network, fluoridated toothpaste contains enough fluoride to kill a child. Additionally; fluoride can cause abdominal problems, dental fluorosis and allergic reaction.

Brush your kid under your supervision and be cautious your kid will not swallow the toothpaste.

Our ultramodern lifestyle urges us to use non-stick coating cookware. Non-stick coating pots or pans are usually coated with Teflon, chemically known as polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE).

Environmental Working Group (EWG) in their petition to the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission regarding a requirement of warning labels on non-stick coating cookware have listed out the harmful effects of Teflon in certain events.

According to petition, when Teflon and other non-stick PTFE coating heated to normal cooking temperature are acutely toxic to birds. When Teflon is heated to 662°F,fumes from it produces “polymer fume fever” characterized by flu-like illness with fever, chills, headache, cough, sore throat, tightness in chest and shortness of breath.

Even when such cookware when heated on a conventional stovetop burner on high temperature for 2 minutes release  at least six toxic gases.

Cast iron cookwares are good option in such cases.

Household cleaner

Medicinal advances tell us the importance of home cleanliness from time to time. Home cleanliness is becoming an integral part of our everyday life to avoid deadliest diseases. However, household cleaners we are using for cleanliness purpose are dangerous for themselves.

New Mexico State University’s Cooperative Extension Service College of Agriculture and Home Economics in their guide states many household products use for cleaning, car care and yard care are toxic, corrosive, flammable or reactive.

These cleansing products contain caustics or solvents, which threaten human health when used, stored or disposed improperly.

Try alternative options such as baking soda, vinegar, and borax or lemon oil for cleansing.

Air conditioner

Many of us can’t imagine their lives without an air conditioner. Now-a-day AC has been becoming a vital component of every house.

International Journal of Epidemiology documented that use of AC system is a risk for increased use of health services. AC ventilation system disseminates the contaminants, an illness causing agent, into the indoor air. This leads to non-specific symptoms such as breathing difficulties, irritated skin, headache and fatigue.

AC surfaces are constantly in moist condition, which favours the growth of microorganism. As these microorganisms are in the direct path of supplied air get spread in room easily.

Good option is opening your window and allowing fresh outside air to circulate in room or car.

Dry cleaning

We are habitual of dry cleaning to maintain our cloth. Most dry cleaning uses chemical known as perchloroethylene or tetrachloroethylene (PERC).National Academy of Sciences says that PERC is likely to cause cancer in human documented on Webmed.

PERC can be an agent for nerve and brain damage also.

Green dry cleaning means using an environmentally safe agent instead of PERC.It is new concept and may take some time to establish well. Letting your dry clean garments in the outside air for one to two days is good solution to minimize the exposure to PERC.

Compact fluorescent lamps (CFL)

Energy efficiency issue makes us to replace regular incandescent light bulbs with CFLs.Health Canada reported some sensitive people experience headache, eye strain or even depression with CFLs use.

Health risk with CFLs is more when they break up and not properly disposed off. On break up, CFLs release mercury vapor which are toxic to human health reported by Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

Sensitive people can switch over regular incandescent light bulbs, and special precautions must be followed while disposing broken CFLs.

These are some of the scientifically proved hidden household dangers, which require special attention while handling, storing or disposing.
