Go Organic for Nutritious Life and Clean Environment

Last week when I visited the supermarket, I came across the display of organic food banners just above fruits, veggies and even some non-vegetarian food stuff. I was very glad as at least someone has taken a great step to provide nutritional food to us in everyday life and making environment pollution free.

Quality standard of conventional food always remain a question mark for consumer. Hence, in recent years the demand for organic food is booming, as experts consider it as healthier and nutritious food for body. According to 2011 press releases from Organic Tread Association, the organic industry sprang up at the rate of nearly eight percent in 2010.

Organic farming and organic foods

According to UK Food Standards Agency, organic farming is a holistic approach of food production centring on preserving soil fertility with manure, compost and crop rotation instead of use of pest-killers, weed killer or chemical fertilizers.

Organic farming ensures non usage of  synthetic chemicals, sewage sludge, radiation treatment to kill pest and genetically engineered materials to grow a plant differently. Only limited numbers of additives are used while organic food processing.

In case of non-vegetarian organic foodstuff, animals are not treated with antibiotics or growth hormones or not produce by cloning method as well. Organic standard doesn’t limit up to production phase but adhere up to processing, distribution and sales phase also.

Organically cultivated tomatoes were rich in phenolic compounds as compared to conventionally treated one suggest a  recent study published by Alpha Galileo foundation. 
Similarly another study findings published in  Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry, revealed that blueberry fruit grown in organic farming exhibited higher level of total phenolic, total anthocyanins and antioxidant activity as compared to blueberry grown in a conventional manner.

Polyphenols are the natural antioxidants and of great nutritional value in fighting with heart diseases, degenerative diseases, and cancer to some extent. Variation also existed in level of sugar contents and other phytonutrients among two differently cultivated patterns.

Organically grown foods contain high level of cancer-fighting chemicals than conventionally grown foods says Organic Consumer Association in a press release. “Organic farming doesn’t use nitrogenous fertilizer; as a result, plants respond by activating their own defence mechanism, increasing the levels of all antioxidants.” says expert from the  University of Barcelona who did several studies on organic food. 

A study of corn, strawberries and marrionberries suggested that antioxidant level was significantly high in organically grown foods versus conventionally grown foods. It has been found that  Antioxidant level was highest in sustainably grown plants, which uses fertilizers but not pesticides or herbicides. Thus, plants organically grown are more nutritious than conventional one.

  • No contamination

According to USDA Organic food standard and labels, organic food is produced without using most conventional pesticides, fertilizers made with synthetic ingredients or sewage sludge, bioengineering or ionizing radiation.

 Organic fruits and vegetables claim to contain less chemical contamination than conventionally cultivated one. Hence, consuming organic foods lead to less body contamination with this harmful stuff.

  • No additives

Organic food farming strictly bans the addition of food additives such as fortifying agents or processing agents including artificial sweeteners, coloring, flavoring and preservatives.

  • Eco-friendly

As per the definition by USDA, National Organic Standards Board definition, April 1995, organic agriculture must practices in a manner that restore, maintain and enhance ecological harmony. Thus, Organic productions are impelled to use only those techniques and materials that improve the ecological balance of natural systems and enhance the health and productivity of soil, plants, animals and people.

Though all methods under organic farming are not a residue free but mostly are used to minimize pollution from air, soil and water.

  • Animal welfare

Organic regulations ban a use of hormones, antibiotic use or other animal drugs for growth and production of livestock. This is not only bringing animals welfare but avoid abuse of antibiotics responsible for producing antibiotic-resistant bacteria.

Presently, the cost of organic food prevents many of us from buying but in a future we will hope the organic industry makes it available at the most reasonable rate.
