Effective ways to Deal with Dark circles around Eyes Featured

However, your look may get to hamper with the appearance of dark pigmentation under eyes commonly known as ‘dark circles’. Dark circle is a hyper-pigmented area under eye that is distinguished due to darkness from surrounding skin. Accumulation of fluid under eyes makes them to look puffy and swollen, commonly known as ‘under-eye bags’. Both dark circles and under eye bags make you feel aged, tired or sick and many times a reason for depression and low self-esteem.

Dark circle under eyes is common problem encountered at least once in a life affecting both men and women equally.

Why dark circles occur?
Dark circles can be the result of wider range of clinical problems as well as associated with a faulty lifestyle pattern. Mayo clinic reported some of them as,

Dark circles run in families.

Ageing is associated with loss of fat pads and skin elasticity, which makes skin thinner and wrinkled. Under such skin blood vessels become more prominent giving appearance of darkness under eyes.

Airborn allergens such as pollen, dust or pet danger causes itchy sensation in eyes making person to rub eyes. Allergy can lead to nasal congestion so the veins draining from eyes to nose becomes dilated and darken.

Sun exposure
Exposure to UV ray's damage skin collagen and cause wrinkles formation. Furthermore, UV rays produce more melanin, a pigment giving darker appearance to skin leading dark circles.

Faulty lifestyle pattern
Poor sleep, stress and tiredness make skin to look paler, so blood vessels underneath skin become more visible giving bluish appearance to skin.
Insufficient intake of a fluid favours dark circle as a sign of dehydration.

Poor dietary habits lead to deficiency of vitamin and iron. Deficiency of vitamin C leads to collagen breakdown and prone to wrinkle. According to Harvard school of Public health vitamin K is essential for blood clotting, but deficiency causes blood capillaries to leak and make dark circles more prominent. Deficiency of iron imparts bluish tinge below eyes. Eating a lot of salty food causes fluid retention in the body giving puffiness under eyes.
Smoking weakens the collagen and lead to premature wrinkles favoring dark circles.

Preventing dark circles

Lifestyle modification
In most cases, root cause for dark circles is faulty lifestyle and hence lifestyle modification is one of the ways to control it.

  • Experts suggest sleeping on seven to eight hours is good for health. Avoid alcohol and de-stress yourself to get quality sleep.
  • Eat a diet enrich with vitamin, iron and antioxidant. Vitamin C helps in collagen formation, improves skin quality and fight with allergies. Iron increases haemoglobin concentration and oxygen-carrying capacity of blood, so skin cells receive enough oxygen and nutrients.

Green leafy vegetables, carrot, spinach, papaya and mango and   citrus fruits are good for skin.

  • Maintain hydration by drinking a lot of water, and fruit juices.
  • Reduce excessive salt intake.
  • Don’t rub your eyes as they worsen dark circles.
  • Protect your eyes from harmful UV rays with sunglasses and sunscreen while going outside.
  • Stop smoking with motivation, using nicotine replacement patch or joining support groups.
  • Try to relax with yoga and meditation to combat with stress and anxiety.

Home remedies

  • Cold compresses: Apply cold compresses such as a chilled teaspoon wrapped in a soft cloth to dilate blood vessels under eyes.
  • Green tea bags: Apply green tea bags under eyes as green tea contains a natural anti-inflammatory ECGC reported by University of Maryland. Such anti-inflammatory property helps to reduce fluid collection under eyes.
  • Rinse your nasal passage with saline spray or neti-pot technique to clear nasal congestion
  • Cover eyes with cucumber or potato slices for 15 minutes to refresh skin and reduce puffiness
  • Use an extra pillow under head to facilitate fluid drainage and avoids under eye bags.
  • Apply a moisturizer under eyes to maintain skin hydration

Cosmetic management

  • Apply a cream  with vitamin A and K as an ingredient to make skin healthy and supple
  • Choose under eye cream containing plant-based compound such as root extract
  • Use right concealer to hide dark circles such as peach for bluish circles
  • Injectable fillers to fill under eyes wrinkles and reduce puffiness below eyes and laser resurfacing are cosmetological procedure options to control dark circles reported by The New York Times.
