We have always wanted our babies and toddlers to take their naps on time, retired and elders above 60 too enjoy taking their naps. If we did not get the right amount of sleep last night we too feel like taking a good relaxing nap, as sleep is cumulative but it not usually possible, as most of us work from 9-6 and cannot think of taking a nap.
Being very productive and efficient is needed in this fast paced world, normally our bodies need 6-7 hours of sleep and not getting enough sleep can impair our performance and judgment and can leave us feeling lethargic.

 Its human nature to feel tired after 8 hours of work, that’s when we feel like taking a short nap. Some of us may feel more tired and lethargic following a nap however, it could be actually be very relaxing for many. Have you realized how babies and toddlers are recharged after a nap?

 Our brain keeps needing rest very often- taking a nap is the best way to refresh the brain and keep ourselves relaxed. Although society often laughs at people who take their naps, do not feel guilty if you find the nap beneficial for you, as every human being is different. If taking a nap can refresh, rejuvenate and help improve your performances why not try taking a nap?

“You will feel better almost immediately after a nap”, says Sara Mednick, PhD, a sleep medicine researcher at the University of California at San Diego and author of Take a Nap! Change Your Life.

 If you are in a position to take a nap it can be very beneficial. Here are a few benefits of taking a good nap.


Improves memory- Research shows that a good comforting nap can help increase memory, it helps you perform better in test and exams.

Decreases stress- Stress can cause a lot of health issues, a nap can help reduce stress and can leave you feeling recharged.

NASA found that military pilots and astronauts who took a 40-minute nap improved alertness by 100 percent and performance by 34 percent, and recent Harvard University research also revealed that college students who napped between tasks performed better than those who stayed awake. 

Increases creativity- A short nap improves thinking ability this helps you be creative at things and lets you come up with new ideas and sharpens your thinking skills. It boosts the ability of learning new things.

Calms you down: after a hectic morning and running around a short nap can help you calm down and help you improve your judgment. 
Increases your patience level- a nap often helps you slow down, this helps you take clear decisions and work well with other.

Increases energy levels: Often a good nap recharges you and gives you the required energy to deal with the rest of the day.

Helps you exercise better: as exercise plays an essential part in our lives, a short nap gives you the energy required to exercise and keep your body flexible.

Good for skin: sleep is good for our skin and a good nap keeps your skin healthy.

Lifts mood: A good nap usually improves moods and keeps us refreshed; instead of feeling irritable it helps us improve relationships. It often leaves you feeling good.

Speeds performance-As we do feel tired after working for 8-9 hours during the mornings; a short power nap speeds our performances and sharpens ours skills.

Helps clear clutter-If you are going through stressful situation like deadlines or exams it often helps you clear the clutter and enhances your senses.

Do not need caffeine- most people drink a cup of coffee or tea around the mid afternoon hours a nap helps you avoid caffeine.

Improves judgment and accuracy-It improves judgment and accuracy as it makes you efficient and helps you work faster and quicker as after a nap your energy is restored.

Speeds up performances of motor skills and sport: We have often seen toddlers performing better after taking naps; it helps us perform better and practice our sports and other activities efficiently.

Things to remember before taking a nap:

  • Avoid sleeping right after a meal.
  • Avoid sleeping for more than 40 minutes.
  • Keep the room dark, comfortable and cool.
  • Plan in advance.
  • Take naps on weekends and holidays.
  • Use an alarm clock to wake you up.
  • Try to nap at the same time during the day.

There is no reason to feel guilty if you enjoy taking a nap as there’s nothing like taking a quick one to restore energy. This downtime often helps you rejuvenate.
