Coronary Angioplasty with Stent

Coronary Angioplasty spelt as ‘AN-jee-oh-plas-tee’ procedure is executed to release blocked or narrowed heart arteries to allow appropriate blood flow to heart muscles. Nowadays, a small metal mesh tube called the stent is placed at the correct position in angioplasty to avoid the risk of contraction of the artery again. Two sorts of stents are available now. One of them is medicine layered, known as drug-eluting stent, and secondly, a bare-metal stent devoid of medicine. The initial heart stent was invented by Charles Theodore Dotter in 1969. A Swedish engineer Hans Wallsten had first developed the  medical stents and were known as Wallstents, then slowly it was identified as ‘stents’, shortly.

Necessity of coronary angioplasty with stent:

The procedure is advised in order to bring back the normal blood flow in heart muscles, wherever the coronary arteries have either been blocked or narrowed due to atherosclerosis or caused by coronary heart disease. The angioplasty is performed in conditions such as

  • Blockage or narrowing of coronary arteries creating risk of a heart attack
  • Continues chest pain and shortness of breath not comforted by medicine

Benefits of coronary angioplasty with stent:

  • The procedure saves the life of the patient having blockage at coronary arteries.
  • Incision in the heart is not required
  • Reduced threat of coronary bypass surgery
  • Great liberation from chest pain, breathlessness, with superior quality of life as the patient can participate in the activities which were previously inhibited to be done
  • In most cases, when procedure gets victorious, it increases blood flow to heart muscles in course of time
  • A very less recuperation time contrasting to coronary bypass surgery

Risk and complications associated with coronary angioplasty with stent:

  • Blood loss from the place of catheterization
  • Damage to additional blood vessels
  • Allergic effect as a reaction to the dye given during the angioplasty
  • Arrhythmia
  • Allergic reaction to stent
  • Kidney damage
  • There are probability of forming blood clots inside stents after the angioplasty which can form grounds to a heart attack
  • About 3-5 % of people undergoing this process are posed to the risk of heart attack

Preparation of surgery for coronary angioplasty with stent:

  • Blood analysis is a prerequisite for the patient undergoing for procedure
  • Urinalysis of the patient will be done in the lab
  • Diagnostic test like ECG, stress tests, coronary angiogram will be followed
  • Check with a surgeon or doctor before a week of the procedure, and note down the list of medicines which are to be continued or needed to be stopped
  • Ask your family and/or friends to support you during the post-operative stage
  • Avoid consuming anything at night before the day of  procedure
  • Notify the surgeon about any habits inclined to smoking and alcohol
  • Quit smoking immediately

 Coronary angioplasty surgery after care:

  • Patient is able to walk around within 6 hours after the procedure
  • Normally, the patient is required to stay in the hospital for 1-2 days, during which the vital statistics will be monitored.

Special precautions to be followed after the surgery:

  • Take the medicines habitually as prescribed by the surgeon
  • Continue to keep the area where the catheter insertion was done dry for one to two days
  • On no account stop medication without the advice of the doctor
  • See that you drink plenty of fluids
  • Exhausting exercises and lifting heavy weights should be avoided for a few days after the procedure
  • Have a balanced diet to maintain low cholesterol levels
  • Do normal walking exercise
  • Quit smoking at once
  • Retain a healthy weight
In general, the patient can look ahead to a complete recovery within few days after the procedure.

Health Tips

Massage hair with warm coconut oil an hour before washing. Take some petals of hibiscus and grind it in the mixer. Apply this paste to your hair and then rinse it. For better result you can boil a few hibiscus flowers in coconut oil. Filter this oil and use it to control hair loss and thinning, you can also use Jaborandi oil which is again an extract of hibiscus flower.
